Bible Verses for Fear: Scriptures to Quiet a Fearful Heart

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.
— Isaiah 41:10

Fear is one of the most human things there is, and the Bible knows it. “Fear not” and its echoes appear hundreds of times in Scripture — not as a scolding, but as a hand on the shoulder, repeated by a God who knew we would need to hear it again and again. Below are verses to keep near you. Do not rush them. Let each one stand against a particular fear until your breathing slows.

When fear comes in the night

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.” — Psalm 91:5

The fears that wait until the lights are out are real — but so is the One who keeps watch over your bed.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8

Your safety has never depended on staying awake to guard it.

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” — Psalm 56:3

Faith is not the absence of fear. It is what you do with fear — turning it, the moment it comes, into trust.

“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.” — Proverbs 3:24

When you are afraid of the future

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” — Isaiah 41:10

One verse, four promises: I am with you, I am your God, I will strengthen, I will uphold. Read it until the future feels less like a cliff and more like a path with a hand on yours.

“For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” — Isaiah 41:13

“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” — Deuteronomy 31:6

“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4

Notice: not some of his fears. All. Bring the whole list.

When fear makes you feel small or weak

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

The fear that whispers you are too weak for this is not the voice of the One who made you.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1

“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” — Psalm 118:6

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” — 1 John 4:18

Fear and perfect love cannot finally share a room. As his love comes in, fear is shown the door.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.” — Psalm 23:4

The valley is not removed. The aloneness is — and that is enough.

To pray tonight

Choose the one verse that met you most, and let it become your breath until sleep comes:

Fear thou not; for I am with thee. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Thou art with me.

Lord, you know every fear I could not say out loud today. I am not strong enough to silence them, so I hand them to you, one by one. Hold my right hand through the night, and let me wake unafraid. Amen.
